When I arrived to CasaSandra by golf cart in Holbox, Mexico, my first thought was ahhhhh. The beautiful white stucco building with a thatched roof, surrounded by hammocks and white sand. Then, you turn around and you see the beautiful blue ocean just steps away from the hotel. This is paradise I thought. Inside the main reception/dining area is so warm and inviting with eclectic art on every wall and little knick-knacks placed all over, as if you were in someone’s private, beautifully designed home.
In fact, I soon learned that CasaSandra was indeed Sandra’s (the owner) home when she first moved to Holbox in 1999. She came to this small island and fell in love with the laid back vibe, beautiful views and escape from the hustle and bustle. Back then there was hardly anything on Holbox other than a few restaurants and shops – no other hotels. Then, in 2003, Sandra decided to share her love for Holbox with the rest of the world and turned her home into a beautiful boutique hotel. In fact, all of the art you see on the wall is Sandra’s – she is an artist originally from Cuba.
I loved the feel when I walked into CasaSandra, so warm and inviting – I always felt like I was coming back home at the end of the day. And everyone there is so sweet, helpful and accommodating. Sandra has built on to her original home, and behind there is a pool and outside dining area as well as additional cabanas in the back with more guest rooms. The rooms are lovely, with organic bath products, the coziest beds, and your own personal hammock on the porch.
CasaSandra is one of those special places that I’ll hold close to my heart, and a place that I hope to return to sooner than later.
